Default footnote corruption in file exported by Lotus WordPro

Howdy folks,

I use an old version of Lotus WordPro.

Sometimes, when I export a document to MS Word (in WordPro: File - Save As - Word97), and then open the file in Word (Office 2003), a footnote is corrupted.

Specifically, one footnote's separator line runs the full width of the page (rather than just the normal few inches from left margin), and worse, I cannot click the mouse cursor inside that footnote.

All other footnotes in the document are fine. But, all footnotes (incl. the bad one) are double-numbered: the standard superscript number is preceded by an identical 12-pt number of paragraph type "numbered list". Easily fixed, just thought I'd mention it.

Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

You might (no promises) get better results if you save the WordPro file in the RTF format, which Word can also open. RTF was more of an open standard than the doc format, so hopefully WordPro can save to that format correctly.

thanks for the repsonse, Paul.

Yeah, RTF was one of the strategies I tried. However, it's not clear that MSWord correctly interprets RTF footnotes: when I import an RTF file into Word, footnotes are translated into 12-pt font (rather than the standard 10-pt) and assigned paragraph type "Footnote" (rather than the standard "Footnote Text" and "Footnote Reference" (for both instances of the numeral) that arise in a natively generated footnote.

P.S. those two native footnote syles, strangely enough, do not appear in my styles sidebar, even when I click "Show - All Styles" - ??

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Whether Word is correctly interpreting the file can be judged by examining the RTF with a text editor and seeing what Styles/formatting are assigned to the footnotes there. I suspect that what you're seeing is what WordPro has exported.

As for the Style listing in Word, what you see depends on what Style display option you're using. Word gives you the choice of Recommended, In Use, In Current Document, and All Styles.
