if i am using the automatic outline format, is that a left indent? i am pressing the tab key. the automatic format looks like this:
I) a) 1) i get it to go from I) to a) by pressing enter then the tab key....i am assuming, then, that they are left indents rather than hanging indents. eta: oops, it is not showing the spacing correctly. the 'a)' is supposed to be one tab in and the '1)' two tabs in |

The various multilevel numbering formats make use of a hanging indent; the difference is that the symbol/number and the tab character after the symbol are added automatically. "Standard" hanging indents that you create manually would require you to tab after you added the first symbol/number/text.
