You probably have set the text wrapping to "Around" (in the Table Properties dialog box), in which case the behavior will be more unpredictable.
In an ordinary table it certainly works, and it has done so since (at least) Word 97. I don't know how it works if you have a right-to-left language enabled, but I'd guess it involves the right-most table cell (of the first row).
