I would be so grateful if someone could tell me how to disable all those ugly characters Microsoft has decided to pollute my computer with.

It is all over, and I cannot work when those things are in every space of every cell and everywhere I write.

I've already spend 3 hours trying to figure out how to remove them

Any of the following:

• In Word Options > Display, clear all checkboxs in the Always show these formatting marks on the screen section.
• On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the Show/Hide Paragraph icon in the Paragraph section.
• Press CTRL + *

Hope that helps.

What your link displays is a Word table, with the formatting display turned on. The result is that the end-of-cell and end-of-row markers show up on screen. They don't affect the output, however. If you don't want to see them, simply click on the ¶ symbol on the Home tab.
