Perhaps a paragraph border would be easier? On the Home tab, click the arrow on the border button (the one on the far right) in the Paragraph group. Click the Borders and Shading command. Word displays the Borders and Shading dialog box.
Even if you want to use a table, you can change the cell margins so that the text and border come closer together.
