Want to start appendix 1a, and have the rest of the section 2a, 3a, goes on for 20 pages. I have a previous section numbered 1-25 which I don't want changed.

I tried creating a new section (Page Layout,Breaks, Next) and disabled 'Link to Previous" and started the new section at page 1 and manually inserting the "a" but it effected the previous section 1-25. I also right clicked on the page number and played around with Edit , Fields and Chapters, but could not figure it out, especially so the first section wasn't changed.



I appreciate any detailed (simple as possible please for us simpletons) explanation.

Did you unlink the correct footer (or header if you keep the page numbers there)? Note that each section can have up to three different headers (and three different footers), and each type must be separately unlinked from its "neighbor" in the preceding section.

Hi aabx,

I'm not sure about this behavior. Please, find the attached file that conatins two styles of numbering, the first is from 1 to 20 and the second is from a1 to a20. it is created with no problem!

Changing page numbering formats in the middle of a document is one of the trickier things to do in Word. When you are inserting your section breaks, use the "Next Page" option, instead of continuous or even or odd page options. You might also double check that your section breaks are in the right place by viewing formatting using the paragraph symbol on the Home tab.
