Working in Word 2003. Have a long document that's all in portrait format. Have one page that is taken up by one landscape image that is a figure in the report. I want the text on that page only to be landscape format and can't find a way to do it. If it's possible it must be simple and I'm just not seeing it. Help??

Hi Ridgerunner,
Select the page in question and choose File|Page Setup|Margins > Landscape & Apply to: Selected text.

Tx Macropod. That worked... eventually. I selected the text and it made it landscape but it added a page and put the the text there, so it took a while. I just had to let it go to that added landscape page then delete and re insert the image onto that page and delte the original. Took a bit of monkeying worked in the end.

Ok I got the figure image to landscape but when I print the document 2-sided it goes along just fine until it gets past the landscape page then all the remaining pages have the back page printed upside down. Has to have something to do with the direction the page is rotated from when going from portrait to landscape. I can rotate the picture but not the text it seems. It would look pretty stupid on the screen with an upside down page but I can live with that as I will be converting it to a pdf for distribution and can rotate individual pages in that I think. I do not want to print this document one-sided unless I absolutely have to. Any suggestions?

Hi Ridgerunner,
That shouldn't happen. Your description suggests you're using duplex printing. To get that to work correctly, there may be a printer setting you need to adjust.

Roger that on the "it shouldn't happen". I am indeed printing 2-sided duplex and it's not a printer issue, it's the program. It doesn't like my single landscape page in there. With it in there it prints all the back pages upside down until it gets past that page then does it correctly from there on. (I first thought it was the reverse of that because I thought it was printing back to front). I just removed the landscape page from the document and it prints the entire thing properly. I don't see a way around this at this point. I need that image landscape format; it has too much info on it for portrait. This is not fun.

Hi Ridgerunner,
I suspect it is indeed a print driver/setting issue, with the printer misinterpreting what the page's inside edge is. Many duplexing printers have a setting to control that. Have you tried rotating the image on a portrait page? If you need to change the text direction on the page to align with the image's orientation, you could put the text into a table cell and change the text direction within that cell.

There's no printer setting that will allow me to set that. Why would it screw up the formatting of eight 2-sided pages then go straight again? I can't see where this has anything to do with the printer. I only changed one page to landscape and 8 get screwed up. I can rotate the image just fine in portrait format; that's what I tried first but couldn't figure out how to rotate the text. If the text box thing works and doesn't include an unwanted border line, that may just work. I was trying to think of something along that lines but have never used text boxes. Thanks. I'll let you know.....
It seems to be working so far; at least it's printing properly so far. There's a bit of an issue trying to get the image as large as I'd like. If I resize it to be anywhere within about 1.5" of the text box, or even more and no matter where I put the text box, the text box disappears into the ozone somewhere. Seems odd. Got rid of the text box border. I think this will work just fine. We'll see when it gets done here. Thanks again. |

This worked. Prints duplex just fine now and I'm sure I'll be needing to do this in future reports. Ready for the printing and binding. Thanks Pod.
