sorry, just double checked, the macro is replacing spaces in the file name for dots in the caption

following your advice I replaced the periods with dashes in the file name and this did not change anything, spaces are still shown as periods in the caption

The macro can't do that, since there's no code in it to do so. I suspect you either didn't change all the filenames or you ran the macro against the wrong set of files.
