Without knowing precisely what you're changing, it's impossible to know how to resolve the matter. From your post I can't tell, for example, whether you're changing the data source, the mailmerge main document, or the mailmerge output document. Changing some content in any of these would neither stop it being nor make it your mailmerge source.
