Believe it or not, I have used Word a lot but never used templates. I'll have to look into that.

Is it not possible to connect to a database engine through VBA and implement a simple document management system? This way we could still get to benefit from the word processing power of Word and have the ability to store/retrieve our documents...

This will no doubt surprise you, but you simply cannot use Word to create a document without using a template. You've probably always used the 'Normal' template and have largely ignored its features.
