Default Unwanted column alignment

Hello,

WinXP, Office XP

Can I prevent columns in two tables or two rows from aligning? I want two rows with different column widths along each row. I have worked around this before by creating extra columns, then merging some to leave the columns that I need. I tried creating two separate tables, but the columns snap together when I delete the space between them.
