Solution found. Double-click here:
![]() Then Paste gives a surprise: ![]() The best workaround I find is select row below (provided one exists) and Paste: ![]() which sadly is no better at preserving merge than Insert Rows Below. |

By the way, there is a substantial difference between Word 2002 and Word 2003.
