Word 2002 - how to select a row that has its first cell in a vertical merge?

Then Paste gives a surprise:



The best workaround I find is select row below (provided one exists) and Paste:



which sadly is no better at preserving merge than Insert Rows Below.

By the way, there is a substantial difference between Word 2002 and Word 2003.
