Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, I wasn't at work yesterday. Problem still exists even with no shadowing on anything and also if saved to a PNG, and if only one shape on the page. So very odd.

* SOLVED *
I've managed to fix the issue by choosing a different Variant under the Design tap. Was set to Radiant initially and once I switched to another the problem no longer existed when pdf'ing. Thanks to all who viewed and responded. Sue
