Default updating task progress

when i was updating a task (and the current day i set to today which is august 15th) the task start date was august 2 and finish date was showing august 6th but that task is 50% complete. so the task that is not yet done can not finish in the past. so i selected the task and went to tools>tracking>update project and then selected update work as complete through, set 0-100 complete and marked selected tasks. but it did not bring the task to current date and then made it 100 % which i dont want. so i made it 50% again also tried making the remaining duration so that it will be 50% but the question is why it doesnt bring the task to current date? it still makes it finish in the past. shouldnt it automatically lengthen the actual duration because it knows the current date is august 15 now.
