Work and Duration are not related until you assign resources.



If you enter 4 hours of work and 1 day duration, Project will not change the work if you go change duration unless you have resources assigned.

Project recalculates duration on effort driven tasks if you assign additional resources or unassign resources.


I do not enter work estimates until I assign resources -- and at that point it is that resource's work estimate for his/her work. If I need more people on the task, I am entering the next resources work estimate on assignment.
