Sadly this is bad news! To make a macro run from a toolbar or ribbon you DO really need to create an AddIn and as you have guessed there is a learning curve.
There's a page on Steve Rindsberg's site which might help (a little) Create an ADD-IN with TOOLBARS that run macros
