You were so close.
View the PPTX in "normal" view. Go the Animations tab in the ribbon Click on Animation Pane. This should open a sidebar (or bottom bar) NOW, go to the Master View. The animation should be visible in the animation pane and can be deleted. You won't see the animation unless the animation pane is open BEFORE going to the master.
