This seems so simple yet its driving me bonkers. I have a couple images on a page, I select one of them and want it do move slowly and smoothly in a diagonal line down left. For the custom animations, there is diagonal down RIGHT but not LEFT? I've tried the free-form custom motion but after a gazillion tries, cannot get a straight diagonal line. Hopefully there is an easy fix to this?

Use the 'diagonal right', then drag the end point to where you want (diagonal left):

Dragging the end point is good. You might also be interested in out free addin Perfect path which allows you to specify the start and end point.
