Default Editing the New Slide dropdown

I am working with powerpoint 2010 64 bit edition. Is it possible to edit the new slide dropdown to include custom slides with custom text layouts in a template? I have went about creating a slidemaster with the slide layouts I wanted, but the text basically becomes a background image and cannot be edited. Inserting new placeholder text also does not allow the font formats to carry over. Thank you.
