slidemaster view, insert placeholder greyed out

Hi, I'm just learning about using slidemasters on powerpoint. When I go to the slidemaster view, the insert placeholder button is greyed out and I can't use it. Any idea why that would happen?

Hello banjodaddy, you can put placeholders on the layouts below the Slide Master, not the Slide Master itself.
