Default Family tree hierarchy in PowerPoint: bugs/errors red X's in bulletpoint list

I have a large family tree in PowerPoint and and as I continue to edit it some of the elements of the bullet point list disappear from the software and their presence on the bullet point list is.shown with a red x or deleted. how do I keep PowerPoint from doing this to my research. I'm on Windows 7 running PowerPoint 2016. is there another software you could recommend that allows me to create a family tree hierarchy.
