PowerPoint 2007 (on) has a nasty trick. If IT thinks your picture resolution is too high it downsamples it. Many people will be happy with the result but maybe not if you're a pro. Sadly it is difficult to turn this OFF permanently and you have to add a key to the registry.
IF you know how to do this the key is HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\Opt ions\AutomaticPictureCompressionDefault. Set the value to zero (OFF)
