I see little grey contraband symbols on all the usual text box handles. I've never encountered this and the author has sent me stuff previously without these problem. I can modify other components of the file (title boxes on existing slides, anything on new slides, etc.). Anybody know how to "unlock" these things?

Usually means the presentation is read only. It's possible (but unlikely) to set this in the XML as as security measure. More likely it's opened in read only for some reason. Is there a read only message in the top bar? Are you able to SaveAs with a new name?
