In Master View there are Slide Masters ( = in the bar on the left: the ones that have numbers in front of them) and Slide Layouts (= in the bar on the left: the smaller ones that 'depend' from the Slide Master). Is it possible you are trying to edit the footer in a Slide Layout while you should be doing this in the Slide Master?
