I haven't played with this so stab in the near dark!
2007 only links to video while 2010 / 13 embed them by default which if the file is large may cause the lag. Maybe you could try intentionally linking the video. I don't have 2013 handy but in 2010 there's a LINK option in the drop menu of the Insert button.
