as seen on the picture - i want to remove the box (which doesn't contain any text) on the top-left corner. how do i do it?

I don't think you can but set the fill and border to none

hi,
since that's the case, is it possible to automate the process? i.e. everytime I have such a table, i want to 'remove' any blank boxes automatically. |

Unfortunately automating this is a real hassle. It should be simple but the object model for tables is buggy.
