PowerPoint has an annoying habit of "thinking" for you!
If the slide you use has a placeholder which can hold pictures ... "obviously" you want the picture in that placeholder. Doesn't fit? "Obviously" resize it! Try starting with a blank slide with no placeholders see if that works.
