I opened Outlook by jumping through all the hoops caused by some non existent files. I clicked File\Data File Management to open a small window showing all my data files and their locations. Surprisingly the two files I had deleted were listed there so I deleted the reference to them to fix the problem. The only question in my mind is why they were there at all. I only used them once as the import source for my Contacts and Sent Items folders.
