In short, no. I carried on looking for possible solutions after the last time I posted on here and as I say, cutting a much longer story short, nothing I tried was successful. Ultimately I've had no other choice than to learn to live with the problem whether I like it or not. I still find it incredible, given that we're not alone by a very long chalk in having these problems, that Microsoft haven't come up with a definitive answer or bug-fix ( if in fact it's a bug ), but there you are: that's Microsoft for you, I guess. They're big enough by now that they don't have to worry what you or I think.
