Outlook locks up when emptying a folder

When I attempt to empty all the contents of any folder Outlook i get a pop up that says:



Microsoft Outlook has stopped working, A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Then Outlook restarts but the folder is not empty. I can manually empty any folder by highlighting all messages and hitting delete but that is not helpful if I have the program option of emptying deleted messages folder on exit selected. Any help would be appreciated.
