Yea verily, I have long ago turned on the 'less secure apps' and am using the IMAP for Gmail.
This problem only raises its head once in a great while and last time, shutting down Outlook 2013 fixed the problem. I just find it strange the 'syncing folders' hangs every now and then and not consistently. Thanks for your reply.
