How to delete an extra instance of calendar
When upgrading to Office 2010 an extra instance of Calendar was created. The one I actually use is is Calendar (2) and appears under "My Calendars." The one named Calendar that that can't be deleted or renamed appears under "Other Calendars." Unfortunately, Calendar contains recurring events from years ago which result in duplicate reminders and occasional confusion as to where changes are being made. Someone else asked this question in 2015 (Markg2 - How to delete a grayed out calendar?) and his question is marked Solved, but I don't see any solution posted. Is there away to fix this problem? Lynda,
If it was me I would try to create a new profile for Outlook and connect it to the existing PST (data files) or copy what I need from the pst to the new empty folders. If it does not help you, you can go back to using your current profile and nothing is lost. Could be that you have to tell outlook that you want to choose which profile you use at startup. regards, John |

Thanks. I will play around with that. Having to designate a profile at startup could be more trouble than the confusion now.
Was hoping there was someplace--a file or profile--where the names of the 2 calendars could be changed or reversed. I can delete Calendar (2) but that's where my information is! |

Hi Lynda,
The profile selection is just to be able to use the other profiel to see if it solves the problem. You can later select a profile to be used as a default so Outlook starts directly. I Thought you were not able to delete calendar 2. But if you can, you can simply move all events from 2 to your default cal. In views select a list view like by category and select all (ctrl-a) then (ctrl-x) to cut and select calendar 1 and do ctrl-v to paste. regards, John |

Does it matter where the default calendar is located? I thought the one under "My Calendars" was the default associated with my email address and needed to be kept. That is the one it appears I could delete. I think I'll do a complete backup before trying this. :-)
The one I cannot delete is under "Other Calendars", along with a shared calendar I subscribe to. I put this one, named Calendar, into list view and there were only 6 items which I promptly deleted; that calendar, the original, is now empty. To my surprise, none of the 6 items deleted were recurring items. They couldn't have been responsible for the annoying duplicate reminders. It appears duplicate reminders occur simply because there are two instances of Calendar. Non-recurring items do not produce extra reminders. Even more peculiar is that when my subscribed calendar was accidentally is duplicated, I got even more reminders, even though these calendars have an entirely different name and contain NO recurring items. The number of duplicate reminders can be predicted but this behavior would appear to be a bug. |

Would love to be of more help but the only thing I know is that you have just one "normal" calendar. It is visible in the folder list of outlook. I realy can not imagine how you could have 2 calendars there.
The "my calendars" big option in outlook can list all sorts of calendars indeed but right clicking those should give a remove option as well. |

After completing the backup I followed your earlier suggestion to copy/paste the contents of Calendar (2) into the empty Calendar file. At that point, I was able to move the two instances into the expected locations: "Calendar (2)" down to My Calendars and "Calendar" up to [main] Calendar.
I will wait a few days to make sure new appointments appear in the right instance and then delete Calendar (2). Thanks for your help in solving this annoying problem! Last edited by let98007; 07-12-2018 at 02:45 PM. Reason: clarity |
