The "X" delete on the Home Ribbon Delete tab is greyed out even when a message is selected. Right clicking or Opening the item allows delete. Is it normal for the "X" delete on the Home Ribbon Delete tab to greyed out unless an item is opened?

Just in case anyone is reading this it has just got weirder! Having added another email account to my outlook my Outlook 2010 I now find that, when I select a message in the new account's Inbox the Delete X is not greyed out but the first account's still is. I have tried all the settings I can find, both for the Outlook Accounts and the Data Files, but to no avail; they seem the same in both accounts. If anyone reading this has even an inkling of what I am doing wrong please post. Thanks
