Unhappy Outlook Goes Into Outer Space

When accessing certain messages, Outlook suddenly stops working, the screen gets hung trying to read the message, and the only way to stop this is to close the program and then reopen it. When reopened the reading pane is gone and has to be restored. The only way of getting past this "bad" message is to pick out the offending email from a list in the inbox and delete it. It appears there might be some kind of malware associated with the message, since it only happens to the messages that contain no "real" information, but Norton doesn't flag anything. This process happens every 50 or 100 messages and does no permanent harm, but it is a real nuisance. Any help greatly appreciated.
