Default Follow-up Flag Behavior

I currently use 'single' view for my inbox. When changing between folders, my follow-up flag will become inactive, meaning I cannot click it to quick set follow up emails. Has anyone encountered this problem, or know a solution? Right now, the only solution is to toggle between unread/read emails which seems to refresh the view.
