Hi Mow,
I suspect the underlying problem is that your system with Office 2010 isn't configured to save in the Office 97-2003 compatability mode by default. If you had it configured that way, there'd have been no need to install the 'Office Compatibility Pack' on the older system. And, now that you've got the 2010 'starter pack' installed on the older system, that naturally becomes the default app for opening files in the newer format. Now that you've got the 'Office Compatibility Pack' installed, uninstalling 2010 'starter pack' should enable Office 2003 to open the files in whichever format they've been saved in.
