Default Files all of a sudden 0 kb

Hey all -

I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if this is an issue that has been widely talked about. I have done a bit of searching, but am starting to get quite nervous and frustrated so I could have very easily missed something. All that being said...here's the issue.

The other day I went to open a Word Document that I had created a few weeks ago, and when I opened it, it was blank. I thought it was odd, so I closed it, and checked the file in the explorer window and noticed that it was 0 KB in size. Again...odd. I didn't think of it really, and simply re-typed the information since I had a printed copy. Then today, I try to open a couple other files, and the same thing happened. It appears to be affecting .doc files, and seemingly at random. There are some that I haven't opened literally in years, that are 0 KB. Most are fine... but it is definitely affecting a number of them.

So what is it? I've done a scan of my entire computer w/ AVG software, and it has come up clean. In searching online, I have noticed people with this issue, but no one seems to have a solution. I have come to the conclusion that these files may be toast...and if so, that's not great, but I'll deal. What bothers me the most is I have no idea why this is happening...and no idea if this will continue to happen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Like most people these days, I have a ton of information on this machine, and losing it would be less than ideal.

COMP INFO:
OS - Windows 7 64bit
MS Office 2007
All of my work is stored on two mirrored Lacie hard drives.
? - not sure what else you'll want to know...but I'll gladly give more info should you need it.

Thanks in advance - I really appreciate your time and help.

paul
