You state: - "The fact that files paths are C/user/me/OneDrive/ makes me wonder if I need to move files before removing OneDrive".
If you have never used OneDrive there should be no files there to be moved and you can change the default location where your Word 2016 saves your files to. Open Word then select File / Options / Save and then 'Browse' to select where you Word to save your files. See photo.
