i cannot bring up some of my Excel & Word Files

There are Quit a few files that I cannot open up in Word or Excel. The files show as a square with a red band around it. I have uploaded 2 files one is a Bakery Cake the other is to show you what it kind of looks like. I get a message that says.

You are trying to use office but don't have office. I have Office Home and Student 2007.

This has just started. I have tried to reset Microsoft defaults, but that did not work. Can you help me.
