Default Installation Source Corrupted

I purchased a new laptop, and also purchased microsoft office professional edition 2003 software. I am not computer literate and bought the upgrade version of office prof edit 2003. The laptop did not have any office software preinstalled on it. When I try to install the software the box for the product key comes up, once I enter the key #'s a box pops up that has "Microsoft Office setup cannot continue because the installation source has been corrupted". I was told I needed a office software installed on the computer so that the prof edition could connect to it. I purchased microsoft works 8. It still will not install. Please help with any info that can be provided. I am thinking that the cd may be bad, am I right?
