Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Yes, tried that last night
I'm baffled as to why PNG formatted pictures don't cause the issue. Have tried opening one of the Word documents in question on my work PC today - same version of Office 365 (and Windows 10) with no issues Very frustrating to say the least
