Default How to make Office (Word) 2010 stick to the present task

I am more concerned with Word here than Office as a whole. The problem is this, for ex. You're on the Home tab. you highlight a word, you click on the 'Insert' tab to switch to it and then make a selection, say change Word Art. The change is added to your document. You don't like it so you do a 'CTRL-Z' to change style. In so doing, Word goes back to its default tab: Home. Aaaa! I'm still working on something why does it go back, making me have to start over? Is there a way to stop tabs from changing unless I tell it to do so?
