Default Opening Word /Excel reinstalls files, loses recent files

I have just (reluctantly but I have to use the wretched thing) re-installed Word Home & Student 2010, after re-installing W7 ultimate on one of my pcs. Every time I open the program (by clicking on a desktop icon for Word), it says it has to set up files, and I have to wait while it chugs through re-installing files.

This has not happened to me before, and does not happen with my other installations of Word.. With Excel in the same package the recent files are also lost on re-start, but it does not go through a 'Reinstall files' phase. One possibility that occurred to me was that it was constantly catching up with updates, but for the last two days there have been none of any kind for any Office program.

The short delay is irritating but more important is that I lose the contents of the Recent Files folder.

Can anyone kindly suggest how to stop this ? Many thanks, adj
