Characters changing between software and mail merge output??

Hi, We have a notes field in our Housing Software which, when we use a pound sign in (£), it outputs them as a rectangle character once it's been processed through mail merge in Word?

Didn't know if this relates to a setting in the Word client to do with character mapping or something?

Hope someone can help
