Take a look at http://www.gmayor.com/individual_merge_letters.htm and http://www.gmayor.com/MergeAndSplit.htm
Both will do what you require. So fast all the work has been done for you
However I will echo Microsoft's recommendation that for most users the 32 bit version of Office is the better option.
