Default mail merge using data from column A as placeholder.

Hello

i am fairly new to mail merge but have found it straightforward in most of the documents so far. i am using mac 2011.

i have an excel sheet where all the data headings (placeholders ? )are in column "A" and the data i wish to merge is in Column "B".

i click the "get data" and select " open data source" which opens the excl spreadsheet and places the headings for row 1 as placeholders with the blue asterisk next to them.

from this point i can't seem to add or change the placeholders to the ones i want.

does anyone know if changing placeholders from rows to columns can be done , if so at that stage do i effect the change.

Thanks
