disappearing footer

I'm using Word 2007.

I have a mail merge main document with a footer. After I run the merge, the footer is missing from the merged document - I can't see it onscreen or in print, but when I go back to the main document, the footer is still there.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what's up? It may well be me causing the problem.
