If the footer display involves any field coding that incorporates an IF test, that could explain it.
Without seeing the mailmerge main document, it's difficult to give further advice. Can you attach the document to a post (delete any sensitive data)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.
