I have an MS Excel 2007 workbook (*.xlsx format) that consists of one worksheet with an embedded chart on that worksheet, and frozen panes ("View -> Window -> Freeze Panes"). If I also then save it in HTML format (to put on the web), it will be merely a static display of numbers and a picture (of the chart) and the columns & rows that should be frozen (on the left and top) are not.
Is there a way of saving that workbook in an HTML (or other web-friendly) format, and having it a) provide some interactive calculations on the web? b) retain formating such as the same pane-freezing effect? i.e., I want the person who is looking at this web-based spreadsheet on their browser to have the capacity to change the contents of SOME cells (but not others) and the chart will get updated in real time (only the cells and chart copy that resides on their browser; my original copy still resides wherever I host the webpage). In such an application I'd probably lock the "calculation" cells but keep the "data" cells edit-able (un-locked) on the *.xlsx document and want those same cell-specific locked/unlocked attributes to remain with the HTML (or other web-friendly) based version. Yes, I know I can upload the *.xlsx / *.xls documents to the website and provide hyperlinks (in the HTML) for users to download copies of the *.xlsx / *.xls files and do with them what they want, but that requires they have Excel. I'm looking to make an executable web-based Excel for those who don't have such a license. It's not hard to imagine that Microsoft would like some fee for this or for such developers to pay for a Professional level of MS Office, and I'm ok with that. Just want to know if it's do-able. |
